Accredited Chainsaw Course for MJOC Members
Please note we require a minimum of 10 participants for this course to proceed. if number requirements not met by 28th February the event may not proceed or may be made open to other FWD clubs.
Spaces are limited and in high demand, therefore first to enrol and pay will be given preference. Any additional students will have to wait until further notice for another chainsaw course.

To secure your place and to make payments easier a Minimum Payment Deposit of $100 must be made at time of registration and balance to be paid by 30th March 2026. You can add additional amounts at any time.

Dates & Times:
Theory – Friday evening 10th April, 2026 (approx 4 hours)
Time – 6:30pm for 7:00pm start
Theory completion is mandatory prior to the practical
Practical – Saturday 11th April & Sunday 12th April, 2026 (2 full days)
Time – 8:30am start
Location: Rob Sharp's property at Buxton
The course comprises 2 nationally recognised units of competency:
FWPCOT2254 - Maintain Chainsaws
This unit of competency describes the knowledge and skills required to maintain fuel or electrically powered hand-held chainsaws. The unit includes completing routine maintenance service as well as periodic maintenance servicing and chain sharpening.
FWPCOT2273 - Trim and Cut Felled Trees
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to trim and cut felled trees with a chainsaw, and complete operator maintenance. For the purpose of this unit of competency, a felled tree is any tree or part thereof, including, but not limited to, a tree trunk, branch or limb that has fallen or has been felled and is laying on the ground in a bushland, plantation, forested or other setting, including parkland, roadways and urban areas.
Safety is emphasised throughout the course and ensures that WHS requirements are demonstrated.
Dont have your own Chainsaw? Let us know and FWDV have some that can be borrowed for the course.
Personal requirements:
Camping onsite
BYO chair, camping gear and food & beverages.
Clothing to suit weather conditions including hat.
Chainsaw Practical:
- Each participant MUST HAVE OWN PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE) Helmut, Ear muffs, Visor, Safety chaps or trousers, Hi-Vis safety vest, Steel cap/solid boots and Leather gloves. NOTE: failure to comply with PPE gear will exclude you from participating in the course.
- Your chainsaw must be operational, in good working order, comply with Australian Safety Standards and you are required to bring the specific operation manual
- 5 Litres fresh fuel (unleaded, not E10)
- Bar Oil (if using own chainsaw)
- Mixing Oil (if using own chainsaw)
- Plastic wedge/s (150mm or 200mm)
- Small stump vice
- Chainsaw sharpening kit (ensure file matches chain pitch)
