Beachport 2025

MJOC has been visiting the South Australian Beaches for over 20 years. Jake,
myself and Charli have been 14 of those times now. It’s our most favourite trip of the
year.
Based in Beachport on the Limestone Coast and carried out over the Labour Day
long weekend, which is also the Adelaide Cup for South Australia.
Beachport itself is a gorgeous little town with plenty of little shops to grab your
essentials, plus some extra boutique stores for a bit of indulgence as well. Going
over in March means you generally get ideal weather for holidaying, this year the
skies were an absolute beautiful blue.

We love it so much we try to make it over the weekend before the official MJOC trips
begin and either recce the tracks or pop into the larger nearby town of Robe, for
more of that indulgent shopping and a beer or two at the pub.
Over the years we have held bonfires in the dunes with a byo dinner and an exciting
night drive back to camp. We’ve also had gathering bbq dinners at the local park
and there’s usually a night at the Beachport Hotel as well. Catering for large groups
is something this pub does very well.

We’ve seen many changes over the 14 years of visiting Beachport. Shops have
come and gone, sadly the Beachport Brewery had come and gone in a short few
years but it always remains a peaceful, beautiful and friendly town. Places like this
rely on tourism and we are welcomed back every year. Unfortunately some unruly
people have gone into the sand dunes and been destructive and dangerous. This
has shut down the sand dunes to four wheel driving however the beautiful coastlines
are still open.
I urge anyone who hasn’t done a Beachport trip with MJOC to jump on board. It’s
Jake’s favourite place, and he has plenty of sand experience there to guide you.
This year Jake had a goal to make it from Beachport all the way to Carpenters Rocks
on the beach, without hitting any inland tracks at all. Not a small feat. The sand
heading south from Beachport can be very soft and challenging, not only on the
drivers but it can really push your vehicle. The sand makes it hard work for the Jeep
to push through but keeping up your momentum is a must. He organised lifetime
member Ken Dunnachie, an extremely experienced sand driver, to take Zoli our Club
President and himself down to Carpenters Rocks the day before the event was held.
They made it!!! Jake was wrapped. There’s plenty of wheeling to do in the area,
especially when heading north to Robe, this is my favourite part of the trip, visiting
the gorgeous coastlines, and swimming in pristine isolated waters.
The Beachport trip is a completely different type of wheeling, it’s an absolute must for
any member. Don’t let the long drive deter you, there’s plenty of options to stop and
have breaks or break it into 2 half day drives. Visiting the Umpherston Sink Hole in
Mount Gambier on the way is highly recommended. There’s also the Blue Lake in
Mount Gambier and exquisite Tantanoola Caves only 40mins away from Beachport.
You never know you might love it as much as we do.
