Jeep Cherokee

  • The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations. Originally marketed as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVsand into its current generation as a crossover SUV. Named after the Cherokee tribe of North American Indians, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since 1974.

Jeep SJ Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee SJ series was a full-size SUV produced by Jeep from 1974 through 1983. It was largely based on the Jeep Wagoneer, but was offered as two-door only until 1977. The Jeep Cherokee was considered a sportier and more fun version of the Wagoneer. (The Wagoneer was seen largely as a reliable mode of transportation for families with kids.)

Instead of a C-pillar, the Jeep Cherokee SJ had a D-pillar and a long, fixed rear side window. (If you wanted the window to have a flip-out section, that was available as an option.)

Together with the Jeep Wagoneer and the J-Truck, the Jeep Cherokee SJ still shares the record for largest engine ever offered in a Jeep. When buying an SJ, you could opt for a 401 cu in (6.6 L) AMC V8 4-barrel where the displacement surpassed even that of the SRT-8 Grand Cherokee’s 392 cu in (6.4 L) Hemi (text sourced from Jeep-Cherokee.net )

In Australia

Jeep assembled right-side steered Cherokee SJ:s in Brisbane, Australia from 1981 and onwards. At first, fully built SUV:s were shipped to Brisbane where they were partly taken apart to be turned into right-hand-drive. Later, knock-down kits were imported instead and fully assembled in Australia.

Jeep KJ Cherokee

Replacing the iconic XJ Cherokee the KJ tried to cover all bases and did not quite do any really well. It was tryibng to appeal to the fast moving compact SUV market and tried to still have a foot in the door with buyers who wanted the capability of the XJ Cherokee.
With stylish looks to help itt it sold reasonabley well, buyers wanting a newer XJ cherokee where left behind. Th KJ tried hard but did not quite cut the mustard as a genuine off road vehicle.

The keen buyers tried to lift it and put bigger tyres on it and build it into a 'real' 4WD but it still struggled in complex terrain.
Three trim levels were initially offered; the top end Limited, a more rugged looking Renegade and the base Sport. All were made available with either 2WD or 4WD. In July 2004 for the 2005 model year, the Liberty received a mid-cycle facelift. The 2005, 2006 Renegade and 2005 Rocky Mountain Edition Liberties received an exclusive flat hood and taller grille. In 2007, the Renegade trim level was replaced with the Latitude which appeared to focus more on an urban appearance and lost the Renegade trim's unique hood and grille.😆

The KJ was offered with the 3.7L V6
Autumn, 2.4L 4 cal with Manual, 2.5 CRD VM Motori Turbo Diesel with Manual, 2.8L CRD turbo Diesel with Auto.

Jeep KK Cherokee

The styling certainly leaned back towards the classic XJ Cherokee with the KK Model. Some say one of the better looking Cherokees in a more modern package.
The KK Cherokee came in a number of specifications including Sport, Limited and a number of special editions.
Featuring 2 WD for the first time in Australia as well as an upgraded seltrac 4WD system. The 3.7L V6 was still there as well as the 2.8L CRD Turbo Diesel.

Still hampered by a low slung front suspension although clearance was slightly improved.
It took a few years before any aftermarket accessories appeard on the market for this model, check out Uneek 4WD for bar work etc.

Jeep Cherokee KL
The most current Cherokee and one of the most capable in the Trailhawk version. This is really the only one that is equipped for 4WD terrain use as none of the other versions have recovery hooks or low range 4WD.
